
The healthcare programme was started in 2003 to provide free medical assistance to the rural community. Three teams of doctors and paramedical staff carry out daily visits to different kissan marakaz established by the Shakarganj Mills Limited for the convenience of the farmers and their families living on the sugarcane route. The medical teams have facilitated 175,950 patients in 5,585 visits to date. Special teams were constituted and sent to the earthquake stricken areas in 2005 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir to provide medical assistance.
Disease Detection
A pilot project aimed at tuberculosis detection and cure was launched in 2007 at the Shakarganj kissan marakaz. Farmers and their families are diagnosed through complete blood and sputum tests as well as x-rays. Field motivators regularly visit the patients and encourage them to take their medication for their long-term wellbeing. The programme has been expanded to Shakarganj’s satellite facilities since its inception in early 2007.
Artificial Limb Planting
Three physically challenged persons were provided free artificial limbs by Shakarganj. For this purpose, the SAP medical team took the persons to the ICRC, Muzaffarabad and under their supervision, artificial limbs were installed. The programme is aimed at providing more physically challenged persons of Jhang districts with free artificial limbs.
Flood Relief Camping
To help victims of the devastating floods in Balochsitan and Sindh in 2007, Shakarganj provided flood relief by setting up sugar distribution camps.
Animal Vaccination
1,500 animals have been vaccinated since a drive was launched in March 2008 to immunise animals against Black Quarter (BQ) and Foot and Mouth disease (FMD). Areas covered in the drive include Shorkot, Shah Jewna, Peer Kot and Lou Kariwala. The drive will soon be re-launched.
